How to Make a Spray Tan Last Longer
You paid for the glow. Here is how to keep it.
Most of what shortens a spray tan happens in the first 24 hours, and almost all of it is avoidable. The rest is a handful of small habits that add days to your color.
The first few hours are everything
Your tan is still developing after you leave the studio. Until you rinse, treat your skin like wet paint.
- Stay dry. No water, no sweating, no steam, no dishes, no rain.
- Skip the workout. Sweat running down your back while color is setting leaves streaks you cannot fix.
- Stay loose. Tight waistbands, bra straps, and leggings press unevenly and can leave marks.
- Do not sit on light upholstery. The cosmetic bronzer transfers before you rinse.
Kat will give you your specific rinse window at the studio, because it depends on the service and the depth you are going for. Follow that number rather than a general rule you read somewhere.
Your first rinse
When it is time, take a plain warm rinse. No soap, no scrub, no loofah, no shaving. Just water.
The bronzer will run brown down the drain. That is the guide color rinsing off, not your tan. What is underneath is the color that developed in your skin, and it will look lighter for a few hours before it settles in.
Pat dry with a towel. Do not rub.
Moisturize, starting the next day
This is the single biggest lever on how long your tan lasts. Spray tan color lives in the top layer of your skin, and that layer sheds as it dries out. Keep it hydrated and it sheds slower, which means your color fades slower and more evenly.
Moisturize twice a day, every day, from the morning after your rinse. A plain unscented lotion is perfect.
Avoid anything oil heavy on the body in the first couple of days. Oil accelerates the fade.
What quietly strips your color
- Long hot showers. Heat and time both cost you days. Keep them shorter and cooler.
- Chlorine. A pool session will lift color fast.
- Salt water. Mission Bay and the beach are worth it, just know the trade.
- Exfoliating scrubs and mitts. Great before your tan, terrible after.
- Hot tubs and steam rooms. Same problem as hot showers, concentrated.
- Shaving daily. A razor is an exfoliant. Shave less often, and use a fresh blade with plenty of glide.
- Retinol and acids on the body. They speed up cell turnover, which is exactly what you do not want.
The San Diego version of this list
You live somewhere with sun, salt water, and year round outdoor plans, so a few practical notes.
If you are heading to Mission Bay or Pacific Beach, rinse the salt water off in fresh water afterward and moisturize while your skin is still damp. If you are surfing or in a pool regularly, plan on a shorter tan and book closer to your event.
And wear sunscreen. A spray tan is cosmetic color. It does not protect your skin from anything.
How long should it last?
With good prep and good aftercare, most people get a solid stretch of even color before it starts to soften. The fade should be gradual and uniform, not blotchy.
If yours goes patchy fast, the cause is almost always one of three things: skipped exfoliation before the appointment, water too soon after, or no moisturizer. Tell Kat what happened and she will adjust your next one.
Prep is half the result, and it is covered in full here: what to do before a spray tan appointment.
When to book your next one
Book your next tan before your current one is fully gone, so you never have a hard line between tanned and not. If you have an event, work backward from the date rather than forward from today, and aim to have your tan done two to three days before.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put lotion on before my first rinse? No. Wait until after you rinse, then start the next day.
Why are my hands and feet fading first? You wash them constantly. That is normal. Moisturize them more often than the rest of you.
Can I get a spray tan the same week as lashes? Yes. Book lashes first, since a lash appointment means lying down for a couple of hours. See eyelash extensions.
